The Varian Edge is the newest linear accelerator machine in the Reno-Carson City region. The C-arm orientation is paired with a 6-degree-of freedom patient couch that can be rotated for non-coplanar radiation, which allow for better dose-painting. In addition to treating standard large fields with 3D conformal radiation therapy, image-guided intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated radiation therapy (VMAT), and respiratory-gated treatments, the 2.5mm beam shaping collimator leaves also allow focused radiosurgery with dose gradients comparable to the Cyberknife. The integrated cone-beam CT scanner allows 3D verification of patient and tumor position prior to treatments, which typically last several minutes.
